Pastor Crockett @ St. Matthews Baptist Church ~ Father's Day 2011

1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 ~ For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Matthew 5:3 ~ “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

The poor in spirit - the humble - will see God! God cannot use us unless we have humbled ourselves to Him & His way of doing things! He cannot use a person who thinks more highly of himself than he should. A person who exalts himself shall be humbled, but those who are humbled will be exalted by God (Matthew 23:12).

Psalm 51:16-17 ~ You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

A broken spirit & a contrite heart - these are the things that are a part of you when your heart is right with God! Your walk speaks louder than your talk & because people are watching what you do more than they listen to what you say, they will know when you are not who you claim to be. When your heart is not right, your actions will not be right either! A man who covers his sin won't prosper, therefore our prayer must be that God creates, in us, a clean heart.
Psalm 34:17 ~ The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.

When our hearts are pure & just before God, He will hear our cries & answer our prayers!

Isaiah 57:15, 66:12 ~ For this is what the high and exalted One says—he who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.

For this is what the LORD says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees.

God dwells with those of a broken spirit & with contrite heart. "Be holy for I am holy... I shall be their God & they shall be my people." God makes it clear that He holds in high esteem those who are humble & have a contrite heart. He gives us peace like a river & joy that overflows!

1 Peter 3:3-4 ~ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Outer beauty means nothing if what's inside is not right. He who searches the heart knows what's the mind of the spirit - God knows your inner man, so be careful when saying "God knows my heart", when you are trying to make an excuse for wrong doing. Yes, He does know your heart & He knows that you are right! We can only be the salt of the earth, that city that sits on a hill when our hearts are right before God!
